How to Select castings

Compared with traditional cast iron die-casting, aluminum motor housing has a very obvious lightweight advantage. The density of aluminum alloy is lower, and the weight of the same volume is lower. Meanwhile, the strength performance is similar to that of gray cast iron, and the toughness is higher than that of gray cast iron. The casting performance is excellent, especially for thin-walled shell parts. It is very easy to meet the working requirements in harsh environments. Especially the precision die-casting forming technology gradually achieves consistency and stability in quality, which makes it very popular in the field of new energy vehicles.


The primary task of the electric motor housing is to protect the key components inside the electric drive system from situations such as dust, moisture, chemicals, and mechanical shock and collision damage affecting the internal operation. This has strict requirements for the protection level and sealing performance of the product. On this basis, the final product also needs to take into account the actual working conditions during operation, among which the two most important points are heat dissipation and electromagnetic compatibility. Therefore, motor housings also need to design heat dissipation structures, such as heat sinks, ventilation ports, and cooling pipe interfaces, etc., to help dissipate heat from internal components. Of course, if the structure is suitable, gravity casting can also be considered.





Low-pressure casting

Low-pressure casting is the most common forming process for manufacturing motor bearing housings. Different from gravity casting, low-pressure casting can feed the casting in the anti-gravity direction through the inner runner during the solidification process. This can ensure that the feeding at the bottom of the casting can be effectively solved. Therefore, the yield rate of low-pressure casting is relatively high.



However, since the bottom wall thickness of the shell is generally relatively thin, it will solidify more quickly during the overall solidification process of the casting, causing the feeding channel connecting the upper area of the casting to the runner to close prematurely, making it difficult for the upper area of the casting to be effectively fed. Of course, after we have created this feature, we can appropriately thicken the bottom of the casting locally and optimize the design plan.


At the same time, there are multiple options for the riser design at the top, which mainly depend on the actual design structure of the product to select a targeted solution. The optimal riser solution can be predicted and determined by simulating and analyzing the distribution of hot spots and the defects of shrinkage cavities and porosity.
