HY Injection molding material selection

2023-11-02

Important characteristics of injection molding materials

Why choose this injection molding material? Need high strength, toughness or elasticity? Is chemical or heat resistance required? Also consider the purpose of the parts. Select the injection molding material after determining the required material properties.

The following material properties:

Characteristics

Example Material

Strong flexibility

ABS, LDPE, PVC

Chemical resistance

LDPE, HDPE, PP

High-strength

PEEK,POM, Nylon,

Cost-effective

LDPE, HDPE, PP, PVC

Heat resistance

PET, PEI, PP, PPS

High hardness

POM, PMMA, PET, HIPS

Fatigue resistance

POM, Nylon

HY finds suitable injection molding materials based on customers' specific projects.

Injection molding materials

Suitable injection molding materials are mainly divided into three categories: thermoplastics, thermosets, and elastomers.

Thermoplastics are often used because they are inherently better suited to the molding process. When temperatures rise, these plastics become soft and pliable, but when temperatures fall, these plastics return to a solid state. This means that thermoplastics can be added to the hopper of the injection molding machine in the form of solid particles, heated and melted into a flowing state. Pushed by the screw or piston of the injection machine, they enter the mold cavity through the nozzle and the pouring system of the mold. Internal hardening and shaping, finally forming the finished part.

Here are some common injection molded parts and the materials typically chosen for manufacturing.

Toys

ABS, POLYSTYRENE, and PVC materials are often used. Many children's toys are injection molded, requiring the plastic to have good toughness and impact resistance. LEGO bricks are one of the most famous toys made of ABS.

Packaging bag

These materials PC, LDPE, HDPE, POLYSTYRENE are usually used. Packaging bags are one of the most widely produced injection molded parts used in the food and commercial products industries. Plastic with chemical resistance and translucency.

Electrical components

Electrical components are usually manufactured using an injection molding process. Using PET, PEI, TPE materials, they have low water absorption, toughness and wear resistance.

valves

Valves are used to shut off air or liquid supplies and are usually manufactured using an injection molding process. Chemically resistant materials such as POM and PET are often used in their manufacturing process.
